Yamaha’s versatile XT660R is bound to impress owners with its ability as a dirt road blaster, mile munching tourer or smile-per-mile urban warrior.
The off road version of Yamaha’s XT660X supermotard comes with a big 21in front wheel plus all the performance of its road going cousin and boasts a similarly long 24 month warranty.
With a punchy motor and comfortable riding position, Yamaha’s XTR is the perfect tool for Australia’s many dirt roads. An instant surge of smooth and strong power is provided by its fuel injected four-stroke, four-valve single cylinder engine. And a trick diamond frame, beefy 43mm Paioli forks and large 21in front wheel combine to provide confidence inspiring handling both on and off road.
Taking the best from both dirt and road bikes, the XT660R also features refinements such as electric starting, an immobiliser, trick LCD instrumentation and twin high rise pipes with three way catalytic converters to meet strict emission laws.
The result is a machine that’s equally at home dicing with the urban tin tops, blasting around twisty hillside roads or cruising along long distance dirt roads… just perfect for local conditions.
ENGINE FEATURES
♦ Punchy 660cc liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, single cylinder engine with newly designed SOHC four valve cylinder head to improve intake efficiency
♦ Compression ratio increased (10:1 compared to 9.2:1 for the last model XTZ660 Tenere) and 21% lighter cylinder head compared to XTZ660
♦ Air Induction System to meet EU2 emission standards
♦ Rocker arms with roller bearings fitted for the first time on a Yamaha motorcycle in order to reduce engine’s friction-related power losses (50% less than without bearings)
♦ Reduction of the number of rocker arms (4 to 2) and rocker arms shafts (3 to 2) plus camshaft is mounted with 2 bearings. Reduction of the number of camlobes (4 to 2). Due to these modifications, camshaft is 22% lighter compared to XTZ660
♦ Use of a YZ / WR type automatic decompressor mechanism for easier starting
♦ Lightweight aluminium forged piston, with an anodised surface treatment applied on the piston head to reduce oil consumption and to increase heat resistance
♦ Less than 0.5 mm deep grooves on the piston pin area to reduce stress and increase lubrication. Piston pin diameter increased from 22mm to 23mm
♦ Ceramic composite plated aluminium cylinder (XTZ660 cylinder is steel sleeve cylinder), improves heat radiation and reduces oil consumption. Cylinder is 24% lighter compared to XTZ660
♦ Addition of a cut away on the cylinder skirt to reduce pumping loss (same as YZ/WR450F)
♦ Newly designed flywheel shape with crank pin diameter increased from 37mm (XTZ660) to 40mm for increased longevity. Crankshaft weight decreased by more than 1kg for less reciprocating mass
♦ Balancer 20% heavier to reduce vibrations and improve engine’s character
♦ Return-less fuel injection system for instant throttle response
♦ Dual stainless steel up-mufflers with three way catalytic converters plus Electronic Fuel Injection and Air Induction systems comply with EU-2 regulations
♦ Newly designed radiator is 25% lighter and more efficient
♦ New more compact fan, has capacity increased by 70%
♦ Size of the friction and clutch plates is increased in order to increase clutch capacity by 15% compared to XTZ660. Number reduced to save weight
